All-on-4 Q & A
What is the All-on-4 dental implant system?
The All-on-4 dental implant system combines the benefits of dentures and dental implants. All-on-4 includes four dental implants per arch, so if you're having full-mouth teeth replacement, you'll have a total of eight implants, fewer than you would with traditional dental implants.
Your Gentle Dental Care dentist places two of the implants closer to the front of each arch, usually around the canines, and the other two in the molar area. In addition to the implants, the All-on-4 system includes a bridge that’s typically made of acrylic or zirconia. Your dentist permanently attaches the bridge to your implants, which gives you a full-arch teeth replacement.
When is All-on-4 better than dentures or full-mouth implants?
All-on-4 may be ideal if you're looking for a teeth replacement option that's less expensive than full-mouth dental implants. If you want to avoid dentures because they're removable and potentially unstable, All-on-4 implants can give you the permanent solution you need.
If you don't have enough healthy gum tissue to properly support removable dentures, All-on-4 may be a better choice for you. While you still need a reasonable amount of healthy gum tissue for All-on-4 implants, the most important factor is typically your jawbone.
How does the All-on-4 process work?
The All-on-4 process generally takes several visits from start to finish. Your Gentle Dental Care dentist starts by taking digital X-rays to check your jawbone density. As long as you have sufficient healthy bone to support the All-on-4 implants, your dentist next creates molds of one or both arches. These molds act as a pattern for the in-house lab to create your denture bridge.
Usually, you get a temporary denture bridge on the same day you get your implants installed. You'll wear that temporary denture bridge for several months at least while your mouth adjusts to the new dental implants. Once your dental implants are fully integrated into your jawbone, making them very stable, your dentist creates a new permanent denture bridge and anchors it to the implants.
